Maybe your doctor has said to you, “you need to eat healthier, lose weight and lower your cholesterol and then I’ll see you in a year!”
Oh ok, thanks for the directive doc, but HOW??
How are you supposed to take on this incredible challenge of changing your health and wellness and then maintain it for the rest of your life? And here’s a much deeper thought, why is this so important to you? What is going to motivate you to be healthier and feel better?
The bottom line is, humans don’t want to be told what to do and quite frankly, psychologically, this directive method has been proven to only makes matters worse.
So here is why everyone needs a health coach, even coaches themselves.
Why do I need a health coach?
Your health and wellness occurs 99.9% of the time outside of your doctor’s office and is completely in your hands. When faced with so much responsibility with the most important area of your life, having someone to motivate you, be accountable to, and to lean on, has been shown through an evidence-based approach, to have an incredible impact on behavior change.
With consistent coaching sessions and a clear definition of what’s most important to you, sustainable change can be achieved. But did you know, most people, including doctors, still don’t know what a health and wellness coach does?
What does a health coach do?
Simply put, a health coach guides clients to overcome obstacles, and create self-directed, lasting change, one transformational habit at a time that will result in health and wellness restoration, in addition to greater fulfillment in everyday life.
Basically, with a coach as your partner and motivator, you will decide what’s most important to you in your life and how you want to accomplish your dreams.
You are the conductor and no one is going to tell you what to do. Evidence-based research shows, who you want to be, how you want to feel, and how you want to look has to be align with who you are, your values, your beliefs, your priorities and your lifestyle.
How does it work?
With a mission of achieving the healthiest version of yourself, you will be empowered to design a wellness vision in the present tense and then set doable, realistic goals around that vision.
Creating your vision of where you want to see yourself 3 months from now and what it’s going to take to motivate you to get there, is the first step when meeting with your coach.
Since most conversations will be over the phone, you will hang up after that first conversation and every time following, with a new, refreshed, positive outlook on your life. You will continue to think about that conversation long after, and be ready to evolve in ways you’ve never experienced before.
After your first coaching session; which is the longest one as you and your coach get to know each other and get to the heart of the matter, you will continue to meet for shorter sessions each week or every other week (you decide).
Within each touch base, you’ll check in to see how you are doing with the goals that you set for yourself the prior week, overcome obstacles, create new goals, and talk about whatever might be on your mind.
This continued and consistent 30-35 minute weekly or bi-weekly touch base will be your motivation to continue to conquer your goals and achieve all of your dreams. Having a partner in your corner and someone who positively affirms you does wonders for both your overall health and your well-being.
