We all have been there, staring into the fridge with that late night craving, wondering what to eat. Regardless of what time of day it is, having a plan is important, especially right before bed so that you don’t negatively affect your sleep; which is essential to your health. So we thought it was important for you to know ahead of time the worst foods to eat at night; take note.

Red meat

Although it may seem like a good idea to eat a low carb food right before bedtime, red meat is not one of them and is also one of the top 10 worst foods you can eat. The body uses a lot of energy to digest this food and will make it difficult for you to fall asleep. Protein is smart, but not too much of it.

Spicy food

Although spices are very good for you, eating these foods at night can stir up and aggravate your tummy, causing an upset stomach; which of course will upset your sleep. Save the spicy foods for during the day.

Fast food

Who hasn’t had a late night where the fast food drive through seems like the best idea ever? Well, fatty, greasy type foods will not only negatively affect your waistline, they also take a long time to digest and negatively affect your sleep.  On top of everything else, eating fast food at night will also make you feel like crap in the morning, so skip the drive through window.

Ice cream and other sugary foods

This also is a go-to food for many before bed, but is probably one of the worst things you can eat at night. Sugary foods increase blood sugar and energy levels; making it very difficult to sleep. Ice cream, cake, cookies, chocolates; you name it, bad food choices at night.

So what should you eat at night? Keep it simple, choose something lighter and fulfilling at the same time. Have a slice of toasted nutty whole grain bread with a little butter. Eat a handful of nuts like walnuts, almonds or pumpkin seeds. If you’re craving something sweet, sprinkle a little cinnamon on top. Have a handful of fruit. Eat a low fat yogurt with a drizzle of honey. And if you really want to find calm in the evening, drink a cup of the best healthy way to fall asleep naturally.
