I was an optimistic kid who woke up excited for each day, saw the world through a positive lens and just wanted to make everyone around me happy all of the time. Quite honestly, nothing has changed.

But being built this way can also set you up for countless disappointments throughout your life, especially from those who closely surround you. Although I would never want to change who I am, I have learned some valuable lessons along the way; here are 10 I’d tell my younger self that I live by today.

Say EXACTLY what you mean and mean what you say, always.

Be brutally honest, you’ll be more respected and trusted.

Distance yourself from drama and negativity.

Trust your instincts, if it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

Don’t be a people pleaser; and with that, don’t be afraid to say no.

Let go of what you cannot control.

Never speak badly of yourself.

Listen with all of your attention, don’t interrupt.

Believe in yourself enough that people feel lucky to be a part of your life.

Love deeply. Say it, show it, live it…don’t be afraid.
